Activities in the area

Powell River and the surrounding area has a lot to offer to people who love the outdoors. It is BC's best-kept secret - with long beaches to explore, plenty of lakes and ocean areas to kayak and fish, and lots of wildlife to be enjoyed. Relax or rejuvenate -- there is something for everyone!

Hiking

There are plenty of hiking trails in and around Powell River. Check out the Sunshine Coast Trail for information about the 180-kilometre trail that stretches from Saltery Bay to Sarah Point. You can do sections of this trail as wonderful day hikes. Look for Eagle Walz's book The Sunshine Coast Trail for detailed trail descriptions.

Biking

There are lots of great hiking trails around Powell River too. From easy (Inland Lake) to challenging (trails in the Duck Lake area), there is something to fit every skill level. For bicycle rentals, ask at SunCoast Cycles (south of town) or TAWS (in Powell River city centre).

Beaches

Powell Riverites are blessed with an abundance of gorgeous beaches! At SeaSide Escape, you will have one of the best at your doorstep. At low tide the beautiful sandy beach beckons you to explore tidal pools where the treasures of sealife find refuge until the returning tide grants them freedom again. Other ocean beaches to check out include Palm Beach (south), Willingdon (in town), Gibsons (north). Some freshwater lakes you may want to take in are: Powell Lake (at Mowat Bay), Inland Lake, and Duck Lake.

Kayaking

At SeaSide Escape we offer kayaks that you are welcome to use to explore Douglas Bay, but there are also lots of other great places to discover by kayak. North of town, contact Powell River Sea Kayak or TerraCentric Adventures for rentals, lessons, or tours. The famous Ragged Islands are a wonderful day trip from Lund. In Powell River, check out Alpha Dive and Kayak or Alpha Outdoor Adventures for lessons and rentals. South of town, Y-Knot Camp & Charter offer tours and rentals.

Wildlife

A wide variety of wildlife can be found around SeaSide Escape, and in the Powell River area. Eagles are commonly sighted - on beaches, and in the trees along highway 101. Great Blue Herons are also commonly sighted along the water, as well as other shorebirds or sea birds. Sea stars, sand dollars, anemones and all kinds of sea life can be found in the tidal shallows, easily explored by foot or kayak. A walk along the shore may afford a glimpse of a curious seal; a drive on the back roads at dusk may provide a peek at a black bear. Occasionally Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, Orcas, and a variety of whales are spotted from the shores of Powell River, so keep your eyes peeled! Great wildlife tours can be arranged through TerraCentric Adventures in Lund.

Fishing

Fishing is a popular sport in Powell River. Whether your preference is lake or ocean fishing, there are plenty of great spots to go! You can fish right off shore at SeaSide Escape during August, September and October, or go further afield to Lois Lake or Goat Lake.

Shopping & Local Artisans

Looking for a unique treasure to take home as a souvenir? There are lots of interesting shops to peruse while you visit Powell River. Start on Marine Avenue, downtown Powell River, and visit Paperworks Gallery, Windspirit Gallery, Artique (an artists' co-op) and Breakwater Books (they sell lots of local books). Don't miss Cranberry Pottery in Cranberry, or Tug Ghum Gallery in Lund - or Sunrise Gallery in the mall for paintings by Luke Raffin.

History

Powell River is a town with a fascinating history. At one time it was home to the biggest pulp and paper mill in the world. Take a stroll around Historical Townsite - check out buildings from the turn of the century, still in use today. Wander through the Powell River Historical Museum and Archives, across from Willingdon Beach, or the Logging Museum (on Willingdon Beach).
